Calling all insomniacs
Late night shopping
Buchanan Galleries (220 Buchanan Street, 0141 333 9898) attracts the after-hours shoppers on a Thursday night when its heavy glass doors stay swinging until 8pm. However, Braehead Shopping Centre (Kings Inch Road, 0141 885 4600) shamelessly steals the Galleries’ thunder by welcoming relentless customers until 9pm on weekdays. Both centres host a wide variety of chain stores including H & M, Next, The Body Shop, Clinton’s Cards and Sainsbury’s.
Fags at 4am
Various newsagents are open ‘til the wee small hours but the most popular fag stop is never closed. Mr News (540 Sauchiehall Street, 0141 332 4731) is open 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week to fuel your nicotine habit. This delight of a shop also has a vast selection of chocolate bars, crisps and various other munchies. Stock up on junk food morning, noon and night. Alternatively there are several Newsbox (297 Sauchiehall Street, 0141 552 3939) stores open until late, or try old faithful Tesco Metro (36–38 Argyle Street, 0845 677 9296) if you need a bit more than a Turkish Delight to go with your ciggie. Or if you’re obsessed with Tesco yellow reduced item stickers.
Late night drinking
If the night is still young and the prospect of heading for the last train seems less than appealing then show some persistence and drag your mates to the watering holes that don’t want to say goodnight. Bunker (193–199 Bath Street, 0141 229 1428) is one of those places you won’t want to leave. This late-night bar has perfected the three Ts (tunes, talent and tasty grub) to, well, perfection. The people at Bunker also know what decent drinks prices are – £1.20 for all drinks on Tuesdays and £1.40 on Thursdays. However it has a rival that has also been known to satisfy that late night drinking itch. Bloc+ (117 Bath Street, 0141 574 6066) is much like its name, a symmetrical and compact little package. There’s no music policy here, just a bit of something thrown in for everyone. With tasty food (the pizzas are thin-based dream-eats) and a large drinks selection, Bloc’s eastern European vibe will take you far, far away; until the rain on the chairs outside reminds you where you are.
Post club action
If several hours of dancing like your dad has not done you in and you find yourself aimlessly wandering Sauchiehall Street with a newly acquired flashing dummy then head along to The Steak and Cherry (415 Sauchiehall Street, 0141 353 3088) for some late night banter. Alternatively show off your munching capabilities at Loon Fung Chinese Buffet (417 Sauchiehall Street, 0141 332 1477). Grab a medium box of something non-specific and eat perched against a wall, al fresco style, with your fellow all-nighters. Open until 4am at weekends, there’s no way you’d be Loony enough to pass it by, unless you’re on your way to Subway (79 Renfield Street, 0141 353 2940) that is. With various locations around the city centre, the Subway ‘foot-long’ is heaven to your clouded eyes. Even without the beer goggles, those health-conscious types will delight in the distinct lack of fat-soaked meat rotating on a stick.
Food now
Everyone gets the munchies at some point during a night out, and it’s almost an automatic reaction to join the chippy queue as you merrily make your way home. A particular favourite at the weekends for those kebab and curry lovers is Charcoals (26A Renfield Street, 0141 248 6550). Guaranteed to satisfy your persistent nighttime cravings, this rather discreet Indian takeaway has rapidly become the place to spend your loose change after a long night of boozing. Another (slightly more adventurous) favourite is OKO Express (78 Queen Street, 0141 248 9666). This Japanese-style restaurant is open until 5am, Tuesday to Saturday, and offers a cosmopolitan alternative to the post-club kebab. However, if raw fish isn’t your thing when drunk then the nearest chippy is a safer option. The risk of taking another look at today’s lunch is just too great.
Other late night indulgences
Feeling lucky? Or feeling like James Bond after too many martinis? Either way a visit to the casino will make or break an evening. With various branches, the staff at Gala Casinos (16–18 Glassford Street, 0141 553 5410) will gladly watch you burn your wages. Do
