Supermarket Sweep

If you simply must get rid of that big wad of cash burning a hole in your Levis, then Glasgow has some tasty shops willing to take your money in exchange for goods. If you haven't sold your soul to the download gods, then Fopp (19-27 Union Street, 0141 222 2128) is the only place to get £5 CDs, new releases and even demos from local bands. The Barras Market (Gallowgate, 0141 552 4601) is Bargainsville for all those bits and bobs you never knew you wanted (let alone 50 of them for a pound). Tam Shepherd's Trick Shop (33 Queen Street, 0141 221 2310) is a Glasgow institution. Many a child has gazed in delight at whoopee cushions and fake dog shit wishing their parents would see the funny side and just buy the whole place for them. For funky clothes, Cult (63-67 Queen Street, 0141 226 6822) is the cat's ankles. Trendy, retro apparel for boys and girls, plus a sound system that will literally blow your socks off.

Top five bits of tourist tat to buy in Glasgow

See you Jimmy hat - Russ Abbot has an awful lot to answer for, hasn't he?
Shortbread - Don't buy your loved ones biscuits. It's just weird, and not as nice as this stuff.
Tartan - Invent a new clan and confuse the shopkeeper.
Glasgow Celtic/Rangers football shirt - Sectarianism optional.
Whiskey - Original.

Top five shops to bag a bargain in

Primark - Dress your whole family for under a quid.
Barras Market - 50 lighters and a two man tent for £15. And a punch in the face for free.
Fopp - Stop downloading, you geek, and buy the actual album.
Game - Some idiots buy new games for £50. Why not wait a while and get them secondhand.
Mr Ben - Retro clothing at its best.
